BURMA

UNA and NLD Meet for Talks

The National League for Democracy (NLD) and the United Nationalities Alliance (UNA), an alliance of ethnic political parties met to discuss three points on 18th January in Naypyidaw.

The three points they discussed were: how they could encourage meaningful political dialogue; how to amend the constitution or redraw a new one; and how to ensure that if elections are held in 2015 they are free and fair.

Rainsy Takes Credit for Falling Energy Prices

 CNRP President Sam Rainsy on Friday told supporters that the opposition party was responsible for recent government efforts to lower gasoline and electricity costs and said he would work to keep alive the new “culture of dialogue” with the CPP, despite Prime Minister Hun Sen calling it off earlier this week.

UN Envoy Calls on Cambodia’s Opposition, Rulling Parties to Honor Agreement

 A United Nations envoy urged Cambodia’s opposition party and Prime Minister Hun Sen’s ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) on Tuesday to adhere to the terms of a pact they forged last summer in which they agreed to end a political deadlock.

Surya P. Subedi, the U.N. special envoy on Cambodian human rights, called on opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) leader Sam Raisy and party vice president Kem Sokha, along with the ruling CPP, to continue their dialogue to improve the country’s development and reform.

INDONESIA

Wiranto Unanimously Nominated for 2nd Term

 After the general elections last year, several political parties have opted to keep their current chairpersons for another five years. CALD full member party Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) has unanimously nominated its long-time incumbent Megawati Soekarnoputri, who is also one of the country’s former presidents. This is despite the fact that there has been growing support for President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, who is also a PDI-P member.

SDP Goes on First Walkabout Since Campaign Launch

 The opposition Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) on Sunday (Jan 25) conducted its first walkabout since it launched its campaign for the next General Election. The walkabout kicked off at the Marsiling Food Centre, and comes just over a fortnight after the party announced it would start campaigning for the election, due to be held by January 2017.

Taipei Conference to Celebrate World Freedom Day

The Taipei-based World League for Freedom and Democracy (WLFD) will hold a conference in celebration of Taiwan’s World Freedom Day on Friday, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Emily Lau (劉慧卿) and Helena Wong (黃碧雲), who are from the Legislative Council and are vocal supporters of Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement, will talk about last year’s Occupy Central movement that was demanding universal suffrage in Hong Kong.

Thailand Impeaches Yingluck Shinawatra Over Rice Scheme

Thai authorities have banned former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra from office for five years and launched a legal case that could see her jailed.

An army-appointed legislature impeached her over corruption in a scheme she oversaw to subsidise rice farmers.
