Statement from the Bureau of Liberal International and the Executive Committee of the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats on the Escalating Tensions Between Thailand and Cambodia

July 26, 2025 6:56 am Published by Leave your thoughts

The bureau of Liberal International and the executive committee of the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats express deep concern over the recent outbreak of violence along the Thailand–Cambodia border. Reports of airstrikes, artillery exchanges, and civilian casualties – including forced displacement of thousands – signal a serious and alarming escalation.

We call on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and commit to an immediate ceasefire. Every effort must be made to prevent further loss of life and to avoid the outbreak of a wider conflict.

Liberal International and the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats urge both governments to pursue constructive dialogue and peaceful resolution through diplomatic channels. We further call on the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to assume a more proactive role in facilitating de-escalation and restoring trust between neighbours. The region has a long tradition of cooperation and multilateralism, and that tradition – along with a respect for international humanitarian law – must now be upheld in the face of crisis.

The international community, and regional actors in particular, stand for peace, stability, and the protection of civilians.
