CALD Meets IFLRY in Vienna

Young liberals from all over the world gathered in Vienna, Austria, from 27 March to 5 April 2015 for a series of activities organized by the International Federation of Liberal Youth (IFLRY). Paul Rafael, in his capacity as the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats Program and Administrative Officer for Youth and Climate Change, and Team Member of the IFLRY Climate Change Programme, was invited to participate and attend the entire duration of the 2-week long endeavor.

Suu Kyi Says Boycott of Myanmar election an Option

Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi said boycotting an upcoming historic election was an “option” if a military-drafted constitution that bars her from becoming president remains unchanged.

New Education Bill Clears First Parliamentary Hurdle

A new National Education Bill has been passed by Myanmar’s national parliament or upper house – clearing the first of several parliamentary hurdles.

It was amended to replace a previous education law that sparked months of protests by students and civil society groups, and includes the right of students and teachers to freely set up unions, currently barred by the education law.

Opposition VP Questioned Over Statements Made on US Trip

Kem Sokha, the vice president of the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party, spent seven hours answering questions from Phnom Penh Municipal Court on Wednesday.

The court’s prosecution office had summoned him over comments he allegedly made while on a trip to the US last month, telling supporters that the opposition hopes to one day lead the country. Prime Minister Hun Sen in public speeches said the statements were cause for suspicion.

DPP Will Maintain Status quo in Taiwan-China Relations: Tsai Ing-wen

Taiwan’s main opposition Democratic Progressive Party’s (DPP) basic principle in handling cross-Taiwan Strait relations is “maintaining the status quo,” the party’s chair said during a party meeting Thursday, as she tried to ease concerns over the DPP’s China policy ahead of next year’s presidential race.
