Sihanouk Ville Hosts CALD’s Climate Change Summit

Sihanouk Ville – this picturesque Cambodian province overlooking the Gulf of Thailand served as the venue of the most recent CALD climate change event last 12-16 June 2015.  Attended by CALD member-party representatives from Cambodia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Philippines and Thailand, as well as by a Norwegian resource person from International Federation of the Liberal Youth (IFLRY), the event’s theme focused on the upcoming United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference in Paris, France towards the end of the year, and how CALD could make a positive contribution to this global environmental gathering.

Myanmar Parliament Begins Debate on Bill to Amend Constitution

Myanmar’s Union parliament on Tuesday began debate on a bill proposing changes to the country’s military-drafted constitution, with some democracy advocates saying its provisions fall short of hoped-for reforms, sources said.

Discussions by lawmakers on key points, including changes to procedures to amend the country’s 2008 charter, will continue until June 25, when a final vote on the bill is expected.

Cambodian Workers’ Salaries

Your article titled “Unions agree to push for $177 wage at meet” published on 23 June 2015 reflects a debate on what should be the appropriate level of the legal minimum wage in Cambodia today.

Ken Loo, secretary general of the Garment Manufacturers Association in Cambodia, was quoted as saying about the unions’ target that “$177 per month is unreasonable, and much higher than other competing garment manufacturing countries.” He reportedly added that “current levels are [already] high, and we are not competitive with current levels. ”

April Spending Climbs by P12.9-B Year-on-year

 The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) reported that total National Government (NG) disbursements in April 2015 increased by P12.9 billion or 9 percent compared to 2014 levels, outpacing the 6-percent average for the month over the last ten years.

This development, coming after March disbursements increased year-on-year by 11.2 percent and spending in February registered a similar increase of 9.6 percent, shows continued improvement in spending performance in 2015. Overall spending in the first four months of the year also increased, by P34.4 billion or 5.5 percent compared to 2014.

 Water Park Inferno: Taipei Prohibits use of colored powders at public events

 Taipei is suspending all use of powder and dust products at public events and is considering a general ban on all combustible powders and dust products, Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) said yesterday.

ALDE’s Watson hopes for ‘reform government’ to restore rule of law in Turkey

During a visit to Today’s Zaman on Friday to show solidarity with the newspaper’s struggle for media freedoms, the European Parliament’s Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe Party (ALDE Party) President Sir Graham Watson urged Turkey to restore the rule of law with its new government.

Dutch Court Issues Landmark Ruling to Curb Emissions

A district court ordered the Dutch government on Wednesday to cut greenhouse gas emissions faster than currently planned in a rare use of the legal system to curb global warming.

A judge in The Hague said the state must “ensure that the Dutch emissions in the year 2020 will be at least 25 percent lower than those in 1990” as the Netherlands’ fair share to avert more heat waves, floods and rising sea levels.
