The peace process in the Philippines gets promoted in an unusual way on May 24, 2015 by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF), bringing together Muslims, Christians and indigenous groups to a 5-km long fun run for peace and freedom in Zamboanga City, the heart of the crisis area in the south of the country.

NLD Leader Calls for Urgent Six-Way Talks

 Give the Rohingya Citizenship, Burma’s Opposition Demands

 The Burmese government has so far disclaimed any responsibility for the fate of the thousands of Rohingya refugees adrift on the Andaman Sea. But now the spokesman for the National League for Democracy, Burma’s most important opposition party, has demanded a long-term solution to the problem: giving them citizenship.

 ‘Humanitarian’ Help Ready for Boat Migrants – Myanmar

 Myanmar said Wednesday, May 20, it was “ready to provide humanitarian assistance” to boatpeople, in its most conciliatory comments yet as several Southeast Asian neighbors meet to discuss the boat crisis gripping the region.

“A spokesman for the opposition National League for Democracy party on Monday said the minority Muslim group were ‘entitled to human rights’.”

 Hong Kong: Endgame for Beijing’s Fake Democracy Plan

 The prolonged battle over Hong Kong’s electoral system has entered a new phase with the territory’s government presenting its final proposal for the 2017 elections, which will choose the city’s next Chief Executive. The government is proposing an extremely restrictive ‘Iran-style’ election model with vetted candidates as previously outlined by Beijing last August. That became the trigger for last year’s Umbrella Revolution which saw parts of the city occupied by democracy protesters for 79 days.

How will Philippines Help Asian ‘Boat People’

 At least 2,000 migrants stalked by hunger and violence have been trapped for weeks on boats off Myanmar, the UN said Tuesday, as Indonesia called for a regional effort to tackle the crisis.

People-trafficking gangs have either dumped their human cargos from Myanmar and Bangladesh off Southeast Asia’s shores or left them stranded at sea since a recent Thai crackdown disrupted the trade’s normal routes.

Rohingya Needs Citizenship: Kasit

 Former Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya has urged Thailand and related countries and organisations to apply lessons learned from the influx of Vietnamese migrants two decades ago to solve the Rohingya boat people crisis. Kasit said Thailand should provide temporary shelter for the Rohingya and seek the help of the Sheikhul Islam Office so they have proper living conditions.

 Abhisit Denies Plan to Quit Politics if Democrats Lose

 Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva yesterday denied that he was planning to give up politics should his party lose the next general election.

He had previously said that he would quit politics if the Democrats did not win the majority of votes in the next general election, though he said he did not know when the polls would be held.
