Abhisit Vejjajiva becomes new Thai Prime Minister

Democrat leader, Hon. Abhisit Vejjajiva, MP, was elected last December 15, 2008 as the 27th Prime Minister of Thailand taking on the responsibility to track a new path for Thailand and to provide sound political reform and reconciliatory initiative for its people. Khun Abhisit leads the Democrat Party of Thailand, one of the founding members CALD.

Abhisit won with 235 parliamentary votes against Pracha Promnok, a former police chief, who received 198 votes. Two very evident challenges await Abhisit and his government. One is to provide a peaceful solution to the intense political atmosphere that widened that gap between supporters of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and supporters of the newly installed administration. Second is to restore confidence in an economy that has suffered from continuous political upheavals and disturbances.

Abhisit Vejjajiva has been leader of the Democrat Party Thailand since February 2005. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics at the Oxford University where he also received a Master’s degree in Economics. He was elected as a Democrat MP for Bangkok constituency in 1992, 1995 and 1996. He returned to parliament as a Party List MP for the Democrat Party in 2001 and 2005. He has also served as Democrat Party spokesman, Government spokesman, Deputy-Secretary to the Prime Minister for Political Affairs, Chairman of the House Education Affairs Committee and Minister to the Prime Minister’s Office.
