(Seoul, Korea, October 30, 2002) Liberals & Democrats from Europe and Asia met from October 30 to November 1 at the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea to tackle common challenges in the two regions and to discuss appropriate responses to the pressing political, economic and social issues on the national, regional and global levels.
About two dozen members of parliament together with political party officials from the Council of Asian Liberals & Democrats (CALD), the European Liberal Democratic Reform (ELDR) Party Group and the Millennium Democratic Party, as well as officials of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation gathered at the Korean National Assembly in a healthy and dynamic exchange of ideas and experiences.
Five sessions were focused on the following : (1) current developments on the Korean peninsula (2) political economic trends in Asia and challenges and opportunities for liberals and democrats (3) trends in Europe and the corresponding challenges (4) issues and responses with regard to the multilateral cooperation between Asia and Europe and (5) strengthening cooperation between liberals and democrats in Europe and Asia.
A highlight of the meeting was an audience at the Blue House with His Excellency, President Kim Dae Jung, who eloquently spoke on the Korean struggle towards democracy and progress and further argued that the two go hand in hand.
