(Tarlac, Philippines/ September 26, 2002) The Council of Asian Liberals & Democrats (CALD), in cooperation with the Friedrich Naumann Foundation (FNF), sponsored the CALD Young Leaders Workshop from September 22 to 28, 2002 in Metro Manila, Tarlac and Baguio City.  The five-day event, the first young leaders’ workshop in the history of CALD, was titled “Young Liberals and Democrats: Challenges and Opportunities” .

Young politicians from ruling and opposition parties of the following countries attended the workshop:  Burma, Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Taiwan and the Philippines. Also attending were leading representatives from the International Federation of Liberal Youth (IFLRY) and the Forum of Democratic Leaders in Asia and the Pacific (FDL-AP). Arguably the most important concrete result of the workshop has been the creation of the “Young Liberals & Democrats of Asia” (YLDA), a regional network of young politicians aiming at the promotion of liberal ideas and democratic principles through cooperation and dialogue. Two of the highlights of the event were the luncheon at the Philippine Senate hosted by Liberal Party Senator Francis Pangilinan and the visit of the Aquino Center and a meeting with former Philippine President Corazon Aquino.
