(June 20, 2004) In a resolution dated during the inauguration of Their Excellencies Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and Noli de Castro as President and Vice President of the Republic of the Philippines, the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats congratulated President Arroyo and Vice President de Castro; commended the Liberal Party for its electoral successes and its role in the presidential campaign; and expressed confidence about a new era of development and further democracy in the archipelago.
In the same resolution, CALD lamented that despite the absence of evidence of massive and systematic fraud as alleged by the camp of defeated presidential candidate Fernando Poe Jr., the opposition in the house and in the senate resulted to filibustering and other dilatory tactics during the congressional canvassing. CALD expressed its conviction that the victory of Arroyo and de Castro reflected the true will of the Filipino people.
It also noted the role of the Liberal Party, a member of the ruling coalition, and in particular, party chairman Senate President Franklin Drilon, party vice-chairman Senate Majority Leader Francis Pangilinan and party president Representative Florencio Abad, in the national campaign of President Arroyo and Vice President de Castro and their eventual proclamation—the first time since 1986 that the president and vice-president elect came from the same coalition.
After congratulating CALD members and observes that won in the Taiwan, Korean and Malaysian elections, CALD commended LP for its major victories for national and local positions, especially with the election of two of the twelve new senators including topnotcher, Manuel A. Roxas, former Secretary of Trade and Industry and grandson of the party’s founder.
