CALD congratulates DPP of Taiwan, Gerakan of Malaysia and Uri Party of Korea

(Manila, April 29, 2004) In three separate resolutions, the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats congratulated the Democratic Progressive Party, the People’s Movement Party and the Uri Party for their election victories in the Taiwan presidential elections, Malaysian general elections and Korean parliamentary elections, respectively.

The three resolutions, classified as CALD Resolutions 3 to 5, Series of 2004:

(1) congratulated the Democratic Progressive Party and Their Excellencies Chen Shui-bian and Annette Lu for their re-election as President and Vice President of Taiwan;  expressed relief for the safety of Mr. Chen and Madam Lu; conveyed its hope for a peaceful resolution of the post-election tensions; and expressed confidence that the new mandate will give the DPP the opportunity to further advance its programs and reforms towards the path to full democratization for the benefit of people of Taiwan.

(2) congratulated the Uri Party for its recent victory in the 2004 elections; expressed confidence in the people of Korea for their commitment to political reform; and acknowledged the recent South Korean Elections as another triumph for the cause of freedom and democracy in Asia.

(3) congratulated the Barisan National, particularly  the Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia, for its victory in the 2004 General Elections.

DPP is the current chair party of CALD and Gerakan Malaysia is a CALD Founding Party. The Uri Party of Korea is an observer in CALD.
