Last June 29, members of the CALD Executive Committee (Execom) convened for the second time this year on the sidelines of the CALD Manila Conference “Asian Liberal Parties in Power: Getting There, Remaining There.  All the nine CALD member parties were present in the meeting, including representatives from associate member Liberal Forum Pakistan and from partners like Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Liberty (FNF), Red Liberal de America Latina (RELIAL) and Liberal International (LI).  The meeting, which lasted for almost four hours, served as a venue to clarify issues and concerns confronting the organization and some of its member parties.  It also provided an opportunity to present to the Execom members the organization’s line up of activities for the second half of 2010.

The Execom also passed resolutions on Sri Lanka and Thailand, two countries which have made significant gains in recent months in addressing their respective socio-political problems.  The resolution on Sri Lanka recognizes the progress made in the resettlement and rehabilitation of those affected by the conflict, as well as the government’s efforts to enter into negotiations with all parties concerned.  It also expresses the hope of the members of the Execom for a “sustainable peace in Sri Lanka on the basis of a nation committed to pluralism, democracy and accountability.”  The resolution on Thailand takes note of the programmes currently being implemented by the government to  heal the wounds of the political crisis and pave the way for genuine national reconciliation.  Furthermore, the resolution affirms CALD’s support for the Democrat-led government of Thailand, as well as its efforts to promote reconciliation among different elements of Thai society.
