(March 5, 2005/ Santiago, Chile) The Executive Director of the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD), Mr. John Joseph S. Coronel, attended the Final Meeting for the Non-Governmental Process of the Community of Democracies from March 3 to 4 in Santiago de Chile.Mr. Coronel was one of the 80 international delegates from 34 countries who attended the meeting to discuss the proposals to prepare the contributions and inputs of civil society to the Third Ministerial Meeting of the Community of Democracies, which will be held on April 28 to 30, 2005 in this South American capital city.
The objectives of the Final Meeting were to present the Community of Democracies Governmental and Non-Governmental Process; present and discuss proposals that addressed the common democratic issues across all the regions; refine and formalize proposals on those common issues; define what issues and which proposals will be emphasized in each region in preparation for the Ministerial Meeting; define issues and proposals to improve the CD process itself; and agree on an outreach and advocacy strategy leading up to the Ministerial Meeting in Santiago. The Opening Ceremony, conducted by Sr. Genaro Arriagada and Sra. Andrea Sanhueza, President and Executive Secretary, respectively, of the Executive Secretariat, was keynoted by the Honorable Ignacio Walker, the Foreign Minister of Chile. Also present in the meeting was Dr. Chee Soon Juan, Secretary General of the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) and member of the CALD Executive Committee, who attended in his capacity as Chairman of the Alliance for Reform and Democracy in Asia. |
