(September 15, 2007/ Phnom Penh)  In a resolution passed during today’s Executive Committee meeting, the Council of Asian Liberals & Democrats (CALD) expressed concern on the worsening situation of the Singapore opposition leaders, in particular, those from the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP).

CALD cited the number of cases initiated against SDP leaders for activities that would not even be considered actionable in most modern democratic societies. Because of these cases, SDP leaders have been barred from traveling outside Singapore to attend international activities.

CALD called on the government of Singapore to review its laws and legal processes that militate against freedom of expression; to encourage its citizens to engage in the promotion of democracy and justice without fear of reprisal; to permit political leaders to travel freely and engage in discussion and debate on political issues; and, to stop its persecution of Dr. Chee Soon Juan, SDP Secretary General, who is currently in prison at Singapore’s Queenstown Remand Prison.
