(February 8, 2007/ Jakarta, Indonesia) The Council of Asian Liberals & Democrats held today its first Executive Committee meeting for 2007 at the Four Season Hotel in the Indonesian capital.
The meeting, presided by CALD Secretary General, Dr. Nereus Acosta, MP, was attended by former CALD Chairman and Philippine Education Secretary Florencio “Butch” Abad; former CALD Secretary General and Democrat Party (Thailand) Spokesman Ong Ard Klampaiboon; Madam Saumura Tioulong, MP, of the Sam Rainsy Party of Cambodia; CALD Women’s Caucus Chair and LP (Pils) Vice President Rep. Dina Abad; Mr. Lee Kah Choon, Deputy Secretary General of the Malaysian People’s Movement Party (Gerakan); Dr. Rajiva Wijesinha, President of the Liberal Party of Sri Lanka; Ms. Chee Siok Chin of the Singapore Democratic Party; Mr. David Taw of the National Council of the Union of Burma; Ms. Amy Hsiao and Ms. Pingya Hsu of the Democratic Progressive Party of Taiwan; Messrs. Taslim Herwami and Hanif Dhakiri of Indonesia’s Nation Awakening Party (PKB); and, Dr. Asif Khan of the Liberal Forum Pakistan.
Attending from FNF are Mr. Hubertus von Welck, Regional Director for East and Southeast Asia and Mr. Siegfried Herzog, Resident Representative (Manila). CALD Executive Director John Joseph S. Coronel and Program Officers Carlo Religioso and Paolo Zamora also attended.
The Execom reviewed CALD’s active participation in the 54th Liberal International Congress (November 2006) in Marrakech, Morocco and the recently concluded 1st CALD Political Party Management Workshop. The projects for 2007 were also discussed.
