(December 10, 2007/ Taipei, Taiwan) Held at the Taipei 101, an outstanding engineeringlandmark in Taipei, the CALD General Assembly was formally opened by CALD chair, Hon. Franklin M. Drilon and CALD secretary general, Dr. J.R. Nereus O. Acosta.
The General Assembly (GA) was fully represented by the eight CALD member parties namely: Democrat Party of Thailand, Democratic Progressive Party of Taiwan, Liberal Party of the Philippines, Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia, Sam Rainsy Party, Liberal Party of Sri Lanka, Singapore Democratic Party, and National Council of the Union of Burma. Also present were CALD associate member, Liberal Forum Pakistan, and CALD observer parties, Nation Awakening Party of Indonesia and Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle. Representatives from CALD’s partners, Liberal International and Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Liberty, were in attendance as well.
The GA agenda included the review of activities of the CALD Women’s Workshop held last September 13-16, 2007 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia and of the 5th CALD Communications Workshop held last November 18-23, 2007 in Manila, Philippines.
The envisioned projects for 2008 were also discussed. The proposed projects include the continuing of the CALD internships to the European Parliament, the SEACA-CALD Migration Conference in Bangkok, the Asian Democracy Online: Freedom without Borders, ALDE-CALD Meeting in Brussels, the 2ndCALD Politcal Party Management Workshop in Penang, and the 15th Anniversary Conference among others.
The Executive Committee meeting held at the Grand Hyatt hotel followed after the GA. The CALD member party reports and the changes in the current CALD leadership were discussed.
