Suu Kyi urges ‘freedom from fear’ on World AIDS Day

1 December 2013

Myanmar Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi urged greater openness and compassion in the global struggle against AIDS Sunday, December 1, as experts warned against complacency despite falling infection rates.

Suu Kyi, the UNAIDS global advocate for HIV/AIDS victims, drew parallels between the plight of sufferers and her own struggle for democracy at the launch on World AIDS Day of a new “zero discrimination” campaign and a conference to be held in Australia in July.

“The fight against discrimination is an extension of our fight for freedom from fear,” said the Myanmar opposition leader and democracy icon, using the title of a famous essay she wrote.

Singapore’s turn is coming

29 November 2013

CALD, of which the SDP is a member, recently celebrated its 20th anniversary in Manila, Philippines. It is the mutual support extended to each other that has given liberals and democrats in the region encouragement to soldier on and win democracy for their peoples.

As SDP looks on at the achievements of our counterparts in CALD, we take heart that one day in the near future, we will also be successful in our endeavour to bring democracy to Singapore. Our turn is coming.

The leader of anti-government demonstrations in Thailand on Sunday urged Yingluck Shinawatra to resign, the latest move in a relentless campaign to oust the prime minister.

Watson: Fast or slow EU integration is the liberal’s main dividing line

29 November 2013

European liberals will choose their candidate for the European Commission presidency depending on how fast they want to build Europe, said Graham Watson, president of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe in an interview with EurActiv ahead of the party’s congress, which opens in London today (29 November).

“In the past the dividing line within the liberal family has tended to be whether you were an economic liberal or social liberal. That is no longer the major dividing line,” said Watson.

“The major dividing line today is over how fast you want to build Europe.”
