Jokowi – Kalla Campaign Team Established May 24 2014 The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) coalition has established its official campaign team, which will be led by PDI-P secretary-general Tjahjo Kumolo. The presidential tickets for the upcoming election have been finalised, and with only two sets of candidates standing, a single-round showdown is now certain. For all intents and purposes, the presidential campaign commenced on Monday 19 May, with vice-presidential candidates announced to run alongside Joko Widodo of PDIP and Prabowo Subianto of Gerindra, and their nominating coalitions finalised. For the record, on 9 July, Prabowo and National Mandate Party (PAN) chairperson Hatta Rajasa (Prabowo-Hatta) will be pitted against Jokowi and former vice-president Jusuf Kalla (Jokowi-JK). The vice-presidential nominations resulted from weeks of wrangling, with Hatta initially hoping to run alongside Jokowi, and Jokowi prevaricating over several alternatives to Kalla (the preferred choice of PDIP chairperson Megawati Sukarnoputri). |

Philippine Strategy Towards China Deserves Support May 27 2014 As tensions mount between Vietnam and China on Chinese claims in the South China Sea, and ASEAN issued half-hearted support to its member states that were affected by the Chinese claims, China has also upped the ante in its dispute with the Philippines. In March, the Philippines filed a formal plea to the United Nations International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in Hamburg, in which Manila asked to nullify China’s claims to territories in the West Philippine, challenging Beijing’s alleged territorial claims to about 70 percent of that Sea.
