UN Urges Myanmar to Ensure Media Freedom at Polls May 6 2015 The United Nations yesterday urged Myanmar to ensure that journalists can report “without fear” during crucial general elections later this year as the former junta-ruled nation marked World Press Freedom Day in Yangon. The call comes amid international concerns that Myanmar is backtracking on media freedoms won since the country began emerging from outright military rule in 2011, after a slew of journalists’ arrests and the death of a freelance reporter in army custody last year. Myanmar’s Election Day May Be Only a Step Toward Democracy May 5 2015 In the end of October, Myanmar will hold what will be probably its first truly free national election in twenty-five years. Several reports released this week on the upcoming election suggest that, for all the problems with Myanmar’s reform process over the past five years, the actual Election Day is likely to be relatively fair. A new International Crisis Group (ICG) report on the upcoming election notes that the election commission has, thus far, operated transparently and consulted widely and that the government has reached out to credible international observers to help ensure Election Day is fair. http://blogs.cfr.org/asia/2015/05/01/myanmars-election-day-may-be-only-a-step-toward-democracy/

On Being Liberal May 12 2015 Being a Liberal, especially in the Philippines, is not just about wearing yellow. It is about personifying freedom and magnifying human dignity in the political, social and economic dimensions. It’s about celebrating the diversity of the human story, for we stand steadfast in the belief that the rights of each and every citizen should be upheld regardless of their social class, faith or sexual orientation, not because tolerance is a weakness, but rather because it is a strength. We believe in looking past our differences by embracing them and through finding common purpose in our pursuit to make our country a freer place and our democracy more beneficial for all. https://medium.com/@greypilgrim/on-being-liberal-776f1d58548b |

Advancing Human Rights After the AAC and the ASEAN Summit
May 7 2015 As organizers, Indonesia and Malaysia have just successfully held the Asian-African Conference and the 26th ASEAN Summit, respectively. 1 At the two meetings, ASEAN countries largely discussed economic issues and engaged in almost no conversation about human rights. This is typical for ASEAN — member states historically have not welcomed the idea of enforcing human rights in other member states. http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2015/05/07/advancing-human-rights-after-aac-and-asean-summit.html |
