US Aims to Boost Investments in Burma
June 10 2014

Spending two days in Burma as a part of a commercial diplomacy tour in Southeast Asia, US Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker inaugurated a commercial service office at the US embassy in Rangoon on Friday.
Commercial service offices, as explained to DVB by Andrew Leahy of the US embassy, serve as “an advocate and liaison for US businesses attempting to invest in a particular country,” and work “directly with US businesses interested in learning more about a country or navigating the country’s economic environment.”

Cambodia Opposition Cancels Northwest Tour After ‘Intimidation’
June 10 2014Cambodia’s opposition leaders said Monday they cancelled a tour of former Khmer Rouge strongholds in the country’s northwest out of safety concerns after police and ruling party supporters came out in force to line roads leading to the area in a show of intimidation.

First Presidential Debate Lacked Conclusive Knockout Blow, Analyst Says
June 11 2014Monday night’s presidential debate electrified an already close race as candidates Prabowo Subianto and Joko Widodo faced off over corruption, human rights and governance issues.
Indonesians active on Twitter seem to have anointed Joko — popularly known as Jokowi — as victor of the first of five debates, as his calm and confident demeanor contrasted with Prabowo’s sometimes aggressive tone.

Presidential Debate Highlights Democracy
June 10 2014

Candidate pairs Prabowo Subianto-Hatta Rajasa and Joko “Jokowi” Widodo-Jusuf Kalla shared their insights into democracy during the first of five presidential debates that took place at Balai Sarbini in Jakarta, on Monday.
Prabowo spoke of the democracy that Indonesians had gained. As the third largest democracy in the world, he said, Indonesia must create a democratic culture by educating people on the importance of their right to vote.

DPP Secretary-General urges China to release all Prisoners of Conscience

To mark the 25th anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown on democracy activists, Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has called on China to free all its prisoners of conscience and to cease all human rights abuses. Dr. Joseph Wu, DPP’s Secretary-General together with DPP Legislator Chao Tien-lin, concurrently serving as director of the Department of China Affairs, released a press statement on June 4th, emphasizing that the 25th anniversary of this tragic event will not be forgotten by the people of Taiwan, nor by the rest of the world.
