Civil Will Green Party is the New CALD Chair-Party

The Civil Will Green Party (CWGP) of Mongolia is the new CALD Chair-Party for the term 2014-2015. In handover ceremonies held on the sidelines of the CALD General Assembly 2014 in Siem Reap, Cambodia, the CALD Chair-Party position was formally transferred from the Sam Rainsy Party of Cambodia to the CWGP.  CALD Chair-Party rotates among full CALD member-parties on the basis of year of membership.  CWGP is the newest member of CALD, having joined the network in 2011.

CALD Launches Newest Publication

On the sidelines of its 2014 General Assembly, the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD) launched its newest book, 20 Speeches that Define Asian Liberalism and Democracy.

The book, a tribute to CALD’s 20th founding anniversary, is a compilation of 20 speeches delivered in CALD events, or by CALD personalities in other notable gatherings.  It includes speeches of democracy icons Aung San Suu Kyi, Cory Aquino and Kim Dae Jung, incumbent and former heads of government like Noynoy Aquino and Abhisit Vejjajiva, political opposition leaders such as Sam Rainsy, Su Tseng-chang, and Chee Soon Juan, among others.

CALD General Assembly 2014 Concludes in Siem Reap

The 2014 General Assembly (GA) Conference of the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD) ended on 13 April in Siem Reap, Cambodia – the ancient capital of the Khmer Empire.  With the theme relating to minorities and indigenous groups, the GA Conference aimed to assist CALD member-parties and other stakeholders in formulating policy responses to protect and empower minorities and indigenous peoples in Asia.

CALD Discusses Political Stalemate in Cambodia

A forum on Cambodia’s ongoing political crisis and various proposals for its resolution was held on 11 April on the sidelines of CALD General Assembly 2014 in Siem Reap, Cambodia.  The event, coincidentally, took place during the period when the Cambodian government is (desperately) trying to forge an agreement with the political opposition in time for the Khmer New Year.

Aung San Suu Kyi to meet Merkel, Receive German Award

Myanmar Nobel Peace Prize winner and opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi is to meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin Thursday.
During her trip to Germany, Suu Kyi, 68, will also meet President Joachim Gauck and be awarded the International Willy Brandt Prize, which is handed out to people or institutions promoting international understanding between people.

Rainsy Courts Vietnamese
April 18, 2014Opposition leader Sam Rainsy yesterday said that up to a quarter of a million ethnic Vietnamese living in Cambodia could be granted full citizenship rights via the Nationality Law if his Cambodia National Rescue Party were to come to power.

Jokowi gets nod from NasDem
April 13, 2014Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) presidential candidate Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has secured a much-needed coalition, clearing the way for him to contest the July 9 presidential election, after the NasDem Party announced on Saturday its support for the Jakarta governor’s bid. 

Most quick counts conducted after last Wednesday’s legislative election said that the PDI-P garnered around 19 percent of the vote, forcing the party to seek coalition partners to pave the way for Jokowi’s presidential run.

THAILAND

Democrats to Join EC Meeting
April 19, 2014The Democrat Party says it will attend a meeting on Tuesday with the Election Commission (EC) but will not run in the next election as long as the Pheu Thai Party cannot stop violence in the country.
Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva and Chamni Sakdiset, his deputy, will join Tuesday’s meeting, said party spokesman Chavanond Intarakomalyasut on Saturday.

Thailand is likely to have a new election in July, said Election Commissioner Somchai Srisuthiyakorn Wednesday.
