NLD Leader Urges Moral Revolution to Establish ‘Real Democracy’
August 28 2014

Myanmar needs a moral revolution if it is to achieve real democracy, says National League for Democracy leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.
A revolution was incomplete unless it was accompanied by cultural upheaval and a revolution of morals, she told more than 100 writers at an event held by the NLD in Yangon on August 25.
“Some call the 1988 democracy movement a democratic revolution but we must launch a moral revolution if we are ever to achieve real democracy,” said Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

Cambodian Court Releases Three CNRP Youth Leaders on Bail

HONGKONG

Hong Kong: Occupy Central Anger Over Beijing Ruling
September 1 2014

Democratic groups in Hong Kong have vowed to fight a Chinese government ruling that effectively gives China control over the candidates for the next leadership election.
The election, due in 2017, will be the first in which the Hong Kong chief executive is directly chosen by voters.
However, China’s legislature ruled the candidates must be approved by more than half of a special nominating body.

September 1 2014

China’s legislature laid down strict limits on Sunday to proposed voting reforms in Hong Kong, pushing back against months of rallies calling for free, democratic elections.
The decision by the National People’s Congress Standing Committee drew battle lines in what pro-democracy groups warned would be a deepening confrontation over the political future of the city and of China. The committee demanded procedural barriers for candidates for the city’s leader that would ensure Beijing remained the gatekeeper to that position — and to political power over the city.
