(April 2, 2005/ Manila) The Council of Asian Liberals & Democrats (CALD) participated in the launching of the Philippine Parliamentary Caucus on Myanmar and the meeting of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Myanmar Caucus (AIPMC) which was held today prior to the opening of the 112th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) General Assembly.
CALD was represented by the officials of the three CALD member parties attending; namely, Liberal Party of the Philippines (LP), the National Council of the Union of Burma (NCUB) and the Sam Rainsy Party.
The meeting was highlighted by the messages of support of the third and fourth highest officials of the Philippines, Senate President Franklin M. Drilon and Speaker Jose C. de Venecia, respectively.
Dr. J.R. Nereus O. Acosta, Executive Vice President of the Liberal Party and member of the CALD Executive Committee, emphasized the efforts of CALD in endorsing AIPMC and its efforts to the member-parties, particularly in Malaysia, Cambodia, Thailand and the Philippines.
Dr. Acosta narrated the visit of elected representatives from the National League of Democracy (NLD) to lobby for the creation of a Philippine Parliamentary Caucus on Myanmar. The mission, held in Manila last September, was jointly sponsored by CALD and LP. This effort was also mentioned by Mr. Maung Maung, NCUB Secretary-General, during his response as he extended NCUB’s gratitude to both CALD and LP.
