(December 15, 2006) In a joint statement of various members of the Council of Asian Liberals & Democrats (CALD), the Liberal Party of the Philippines (LP), the Democratic Progressive Party of Taiwan (DPP), the Sam Rainsy Party of Cambodia (SRP), the Democratic Party of Hong Kong (DPHK) and the Liberal Party of Sri Lanka (LP-Sri Lanka) expressed today concern about the deteriorating situation of Dr. Chee Soon Juan, Secretary General of the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP).

The statement, signed by LP Secretary General J.R. Nereus Acosta, MP; Hon. Bi-Khim Hsiao, MP,  of DPP; Hon. Saumura Tioulong, MP, of  SRP; Hong Kong legislators Martin Lee and Sin Chung Kai; and Dr. Rajiva Wijesinha, LP Sri Lanka President, expressed the collective disheartenment by the way the Singaporean authorities have tried to subdue dissent through the legal system as a way of silencing legitimate grievances.

In a previous CALD resolution, the organization expressed its regrets regarding the practice of the Singapore government to disadvantage the opposition candidates in national elections through politically-motivated bankruptcy and the tendency of the PAP-dominated government to use laws selectively that are detrimental to non-controlling party members.

The statement hoped for the wellbeing of the currently incarcerated Dr. Chee.
