(June 10, 2005/ Washington D.C.) CALD Program Officer, Andrea Yang, ends today her participation in the 2005 Democratic Progressive Party Training Program in the American capital.
This annual program, which started in 2003, is sponsored by the DPP Department of International Affairs. Due to Taiwan’s unique political situation in the international politics, the DPP believes it is essential for their staff to be able to view and analyze cross straits issues from different perspectives. The United States plays a strategic role in Taiwan’s foreign and defense policies.
During the 10-day program, the trainees met several experts including Mr. Tom Hugues, International Consultant, former chief-of-staff to Senator Clairborne; Dr. Kenneth Lieberthal; Dr. Richard Bush, Director, Brooking’s Institution’s Center for Northeast Asian Studies; Mr. Derek Chollet, CSIS fellow, former policy aide to Senator John Edwards; Mr. W. Michael Meserve, Taiwan Desk Officer, U.S. State Department; Ms. Barbara Schrage, Acting Director, American Institute in Taiwan; Mr. Dan Blumenthal, AEI Senior Fellow, former Department of Defense policy person; Ms. Louisa Coan Greve, Senior Program Officer for Asia, National Endowment for Democracy; Ms. Bonnie Glaser, Senior Fellow, Center for Strategic Institute Studies (CSIS); Dr. John Tkacik, Senior Fellow, Heritage Foundation; Mr. Richard Armitage; and Mr. Randy Schriver.
By the end of the program, trainees are expected to have a better view and a more comprehensive and informed understanding of Taiwan-China-US relations.
