CALD Resolution No. 1 S. 2008
CALD resolution unflinchingly affirming the ideals of democracy and the rule of law and calling on the SPDC to end the political oppression in Burma and take the path of democratic rule and respect for human rights.
Noting that this year is the commemoration of the 8888 Burma uprising and twenty years since then, the ruling State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) still maintains its grip of absolute power and oppression over the people of Burma;
Recognizing the bravery and heroism of the generation that launched massive rallies in Burma 20 years ago calling for an end to the military junta’s rule and establish a democratic government;
Recognizing the unyielding efforts of Burmese exiles and political activists such as the courageous monks and young people during the Saffron Revolution on September 2007;
Recognizing Daw Aung San Suu Kyi as a beacon of hope towards the attainment of true freedom in Burma and a peaceful transition to democracy;
Recognizing the constructive and steadfast initiatives of the National Council of the Union of Burma, a CALD member party, to end the military dictatorship in Burma and restore democracy and internal peace to the country;
Condemning the military junta’s continued disregard for the human rights of the Burmese people and its repressive handling of global humanitarian aid for the victims of cyclone Nargis;
Reiterates its calls for the unconditional release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and all other political prisoners;
Urges the international community, especially the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), to make a stand and initiate firm political efforts to end the political oppression in Burma;
The Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD) unflinchingly affirms the ideals of democracy and the rule of law and calls on the SPDC to end the political
oppression in Burma and take the path of democratic rule and respect for human rights;
For the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats:
