CALD Resolution No. 1 S. 2012

CALD resolution recognizing the significance of the 2012 joint presidential and legislative elections in safeguarding and consolidating Taiwan’s democracy; hoping that the elections would be free, fair, peaceful and truly reflective of the will of the Taiwanese people; urging the international community to take interest in the conduct of the elections and to support the duly elected government; and reaffirming its support to the Democratic Progressive Party in its campaign to regain political power and its commitment to establish an accountable, transparent and efficient government.

Recognizing that Taiwan’s 2012 joint elections would be crucial in consolidating the country’s democratic gains over the past three decades, and that these advances have made Taiwan a democratic model for many countries in the Asia-Pacific region;

Hopeful that the elections would be free, fair, peaceful and truly reflective of the will of the Taiwanese people; with all candidates and political parties respecting election laws and processes and avoiding acts and practices deemed inimical to democratic electoral exercise;

Alarmed by reports of illegal campaign practices and the perceived bias of the judiciary and the police in handling election-related cases;

Urging the international community to take interest in the conduct of the elections, to condemn any attempts to subvert the will of the Taiwanese people; and to support the duly elected government; and

For the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats:

Reaffirming its support for the Democratic Progressive Party’s enduring commitment to safeguard

Taiwan’s democracy, to always prioritize the interest of the Taiwanese people; and to establish an accountable, transparent and efficient government
