CALD Resolution No. 2 S. 2014
CALD resolution appealing for maximum restraint, calm, and dialogue in addressing the ongoing Thai political crisis
The Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD):
Aware that the protests, which began in October 2013, were largely attributed to the passage of the Amnesty Bill in the Thai House of Representatives, which was eventually struck down by the Thai Senate;
Cognizant that the protesters have since broadened their call to an overhaul of the entire political system, to which the government responded by calling for elections on 2 February 2014;
Noting that the most recent series of protests, which now enters its second week since the Bangkok City shutdown started, were marked by incidents of bombing that injured dozens of people;
Aware that the government called for a dialogue that was not participated in by all the concerned parties;
Mindful that the government invoked a state of emergency that will be in place for 60 days with the objective of increasing the security in the country;
Hereby:
Calls for maximum restraint among all parties involved in order for tensions to subside and peaceful dialogue to take place;
Rejects any form of violence in pushing for any political agenda;
Believes that all political struggles can be solved through honest, transparent, peaceful and inclusive dialogue to achieve genuine and lasting solution; and
Urges all sides to come up with constructive and mutually-agreed political reforms that could help move the nation toward genuine reconciliation.
