CALD Resolution No. 3 S. 2004

Taiwan will successfully defeat its ancient regime in its evolution from authoritarianism to democracy…I want to be the person who shapes Taiwanese awareness, the terminator of ‘black gold’ politics, the promoter of democratic reforms, and the creator of cross- straits peace.

– President Chen Shui-bian

CALD Resolution congratulating the Democratic Progressive Party and Their Excellencies Chen Shui-bian and Annette Lu for their re-election as President and Vice President of Taiwan; expressing relief for the safety of Mr. Chen and Madam Lu; conveying its hope for a peaceful resolution of the post-election tensions; and expressing confidence that the new mandate will give the DPP the opportunity to further advance its programs and reforms towards the path to full democratization for the benefit of the people of Taiwan

Pleased that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of Taiwan has won the presidential elections last March 20, 2004;

Relieved that the injuries sustained by the President and the Vice-President during the assassination attempt a day before the elections were not life-threatening;

Concerned that the protests raised by the Nationalist Party (KMT) presidential candidate questioning the validity of the elections and the street rallies following the elections may result to a serious political crisis that may undermine the gains of Taiwan’s young democracy;

Optimistic that the post-elections conflicts between DPP and KMT will be resolved in a fair and peaceful manner;

Confident that the fresh mandate given to President Chen and Vice President Lu will enable DPP to further advance its platform of a legal and political order based on freedom and democracy, balanced economic and financial administration, fair and open social welfare, educational and cultural reform, and peaceful and independent defense and foreign policy;

Convinced that the victory of Mr. Chen and Madam Lu is a vindication of the reform- oriented DPP; and an essential ingredient for Taiwan to complete its evolution from an

authoritarian state to a democracy and to protect the reforms and other democratic gains achieved during the past four years;

The Council of Asian Liberals & Democrats hereby congratulate the Democratic Progressive Party and Their Excellencies Chen Shui-bian and Annette Lu for their re-election as President and Vice President of Taiwan; express relief for the safety of Mr. Chen and Madam Lu; convey its hope for a peaceful resolution of the post-election tensions; and express confidence that the new mandate will give the DPP the opportunity to further advance its programs and reforms towards the path to full democratization for the benefit of people of Taiwan

For the Council of Asian Liberals & Democrats:
