CALD Resolution No. 3 S. 2010
CALD resolution congratulating the Liberal Democrats for their successful entry into the British government as coalition partners of the Conservative Party, and for the consequent appointment of their leader, Mr. Nick Clegg, as Deputy Prime Minister; recognizing the Liberal Democratic Party’s historic role in British politics as a party of gradual but continuous reform; and expressing its trust in the commitment of the coalition government to enact the necessary political, economic and social reforms in the British system that would further deepen freedom and uphold social justice.
Acknowledging the strong showing of the British Liberal Democratic Party in the recent general elections which made clear that the domination of the two other major parties was no longer acceptable;
Noting that the party’s significant popular support could have translated to more parliamentary seats if not for Britain’s archaic electoral system which distorts the popular votes/ parliamentary seats ratio;
Lauding the party’s coalition with the Conservative Party to form a government, the first time Britain has had a coalition government in 65 years, and the first time in nearly 90 years that Liberals have had a significant role in government;
Taking cognizance of the fact that the Liberal Democrats negotiated with both the Labour and Conservative parties in the spirit of national interest and the common good; and that its decision to coalesce with the Conservatives takes into account the electoral results which show that the latter obtained the support of a larger segment of the British electorate;
Recognizing that the Liberal Democratic Party was historically the party of gradual but continuous reform in Britain, working to enhance freedom and social justice while avoiding disruptive excesses;
Congratulating Liberal Democratic Party leader, Mr. Nick Clegg, for his appointment as Deputy Prime Minister in the coalition government, as well as the Cabinet Ministers and Members of Parliament from the party;
Expressing its confidence that the coalition government of Conservatives and Liberal Democrats would institute the necessary reforms that enhance both freedom and social justice in the British politico-economic system;
The Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD) hereby congratulates the British Liberal Democrats for their successful entry into the government as coalition partners of the Conservative Party, and for the consequent appointment of their leader, Mr. Nick Clegg, as Deputy Prime Minister; recognizes the Liberal Democratic Party’s historic role in British politics as a party of gradual but continuous reform; and expresses its trust in the commitment of the coalition government to enact the necessary political, economic and social reforms in the British system that would further deepen freedom and uphold social justice.
