CALD Resolution No. 5 S. 2004
CALD Resolution congratulating the Barisan National, particularly the Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia, for its victory in the 2004 General Elections.
Noting that Malaysia’s 11th General Elections was held last March 21, 2004;
Aware that the ruling coalition, Barisan Nasional, won an overwhelming majority or 198 out of the total 219 seats in the National Assembly;
Pleased that the Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia (PGRM), a member of Barisan Nasional and a founding member of the Council of Asian Liberals & Democrats (CALD), won ten out of the twelve Parliamentary seats contested, and 30 out of the 31 State Legislative Assembly seats challenged;
Believing that this victory is a clear endorsement by the Malaysian people for a multiracial and multi-religious nation;
Acknowledging that the election results give Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi the mandate to further push for political and economic reforms, especially on the anti-corruption front and those calling for greater transparency and accountability;
Confident that PGRM’s electoral performance will enable it to further pursue its objectives, among them, an egalitarian Malaysian Society based on humanitarian and democratic principles and social and economic justice, the unity and happiness of the people in a spirit of understanding, tolerance and goodwill, economic and cultural advancement of all communities in the development of national identity, advancement of the poor and the backward, and the elimination of religious intolerance and of corruption;
Optimistic that this electoral victory will lead to a greater spirit of tolerance in general and the promotion of political and social pluralism;
Be it therefore resolved that the Council of Asian Liberals & Democrats congratulate the Barisan National, particularly the Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia, for its victory in the 2004 General Elections.
