CALD Resolution No. 6 S. 2009

CALD Resolution commending Hon. Graham Watson, MEP, for his remarkable leadership to the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) and for his exceptional service to the greater cause of democracy worldwide

Informed that Hon. Graham Watson, MEP, finished his term as ALDE leader last June 2009 and that Hon. Guy Verhofstadt, MEP, former Prime Minister of Belgium, assumed as the newly elected leader of ALDE;

Noting that Mr. Watson was the first British Liberal Democrat ever to be elected to the European Parliament and was elected leader of ALDE in January 2002;

Recognizing Mr. Watson’s dedicated service as leader of ALDE and his invaluable contributions and commitment to the principles and ideals of the organization;

Recognizing Mr. Watson’s leadership that initiated the ALDE Group’s series of dialogues with liberals and democrats around the globe to strengthen individual liberty, economic and social solidarity, rule of law, protection of human rights, and the promotion of democracy;

Recognizing Mr. Watson’s efforts in reinforcing the ties of ALDE with international organizations such as CALD and acknowledging ALDE as one of CALD’s partner organizations committed to develop and sustain the series of meaningful collaboration and dialogue that strengthens the mandate of promoting and safeguarding democracies in Asia and Europe;

Reiterates the statement of Hon. Guy Verhofstadt, MEP, commending Mr. Watson “for the excellent job he had done as group leader over the last seven and half years and in building up the Liberal and Democrat group into the third largest political force in the Parliament;”

Convinced that Mr. Watson’s steadfast dedication to the vision of ALDE and in the ideals of democracy has strengthened the ALDE Group in the European Parliament, thus securing its key political role in the European Union for years to come;

Wishes Mr. Watson continued success in his future endeavours;
