(October 11, 2007/ Manila) The CALD secretariat met today with Mr. Harald Klein, head of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation’s international department, and Ms. Bettina Solinger, head of FNF’s department for Asia and Latin America.
The secretariat showed a multimedia presentation outlining the history, structure and growth of CALD as a liberal organization and as a vital network of liberal political parties and institutions. The FNF guests were informed as well about CALD’s upcoming projects for the forth quarter of 2007 namely: the 5th CALD Communications Workshop and the LI Human Rights Conference & CALD General Assembly.
Mr. Klein is the former FNF regional director for Latin America. He particularly focused his work in helping establish the Liberal Network for Latin America (RELIAL). CALD and RELIAL held a workshop in May of 2005 on “Results of and Challenges for Regional Cooperation in Asian and Latin America” during the 53rd Congress of the Liberal International at the National Palace of Culture in Sofia. The workshop took the form of a Roundtable discussion between RELIAL and CALD and observers from Liberal International and FNF-South America. This was followed by another meeting in Marrakech, Morocco last November, 2006 during the 54th LI Congress.
Ms. Solinger is a former FNF resident representative to Thailand and has actively worked together with the Democrat Party of Thailand, a founding member of CALD.
CALD and FNF have been in close cooperation since CALD’s inception in 1993.
