(November 11, 2006/ Marrakech, Morocco) Philippine congressman, Dr. Neric Acosta, Secretary General of the Council of Asian Liberals & Democrats (CALD) and the Liberal Party (LP), addressed today the 54th Liberal International Congress during its Closing Ceremonies at the Palais du Congress in Marrakech, Morocco.
Dr. Acosta noted that though liberals worldwide, including Asia, have much to celebrate, there remains much work to be done. Democratic challenges are apparent not only in military-ruled Burma but also in countries like Cambodia, Thailand and the Philippines. Illiberal leaders such as Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, Philippine President Gloria Arroyo and the recently ousted Thai Premier Thaksin Shinawatra and their rise to power indicate weak institutions and the need for democracy to take root.
Other speakers and session chairs from CALD during the LI Congress were Dr. Rajiva Wijesinha, President of the Liberal Party of Sri Lanka; Ms. Liu Shyh-fang, Deputy Secretary General of the office of the President of Taiwan, of the Democratic Progressive Party; Congressman Erin Tanada and Congresswoman Henedina Abad of the Liberal Party of the Philippines; Dr. Martin Lee of the Democratic Party of Hong Kong; Mr. Tetsundo Iwakuni, MP, Director of International Affairs of the Democratic Party of Japan; and, Mr. Cecep Syarifundin of the National Awakening Party (PKB) of Indonesia.
