CALD Statement on Women’s Issues
The Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD):
Regretting the absence of adequate attention to women’s issues in political discourse and programmes, and the institutionalization of programmes to ensure protection of the vulnerable;
Noting the recommendations of ECOSOC with regard to providing remedies for problems women face worldwide, and in particular violence against women; and
Registering the absence in some dispensations of parity for women with regard to property rights and financial provisions.
Hereby:
Urges statutory provisions with regard to counselling for migrant women, and adequate monitoring and investigative mechanisms, to prevent and to provide remedies if required for abuse;
Condemns all acts of sexual abuse on women and calls on all countries to put in place legal provisions to prevent such abuse and exploitation;
Encourages governments to put in place awareness raising mechanisms, and in particular adequate training for law enforcement agencies to ensure rapid response in the event of abuse, with adequate participation of female officials;
Requests governments to ensure adequate coordination and cooperation between the country of origin and the destination country to put in place advisory and protection procedures for migrant workers, and to institute mechanisms to eliminate exploitation and abuse;
Urges governments to introduce across the board parity for women with regard to ownership of property, inheritance and access to financial instruments; and
Calls on governments to ensure sufficient high quality public health services for women, with particular attention to reproductive health and maternal health care.
