CALD to hold 2nd Communication Workshop

(September 1, 2004/ Phnom Penh, Cambodia)The Council of Asian Liberals & Democrats (CALD) will be holding the 2nd CALD Communications Workshop with the theme “The Media in Electoral Campaigns” from September 7 to 11, 2004 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

The objectives of this workshop are: (1) to review CALD-Secretariat’s (and the related member parties’) existing communication practices; (2) review and update CALD communication strategy (and inform political leadership about results); (3) assess and document the role of the media in electoral campaigns in CALD member countries (with a special emphasis on campaigns of the parties themselves); (4) lay the groundwork for a CALD publication on media and electoral campaigns; and (5) present best practices (from Asia and possibly Europe/North America) regarding the usage of the media in electoral campaigns.

Participants include Communications and media relations officers as well as campaign managers from CALD member parties in Cambodia, Thailand, Philippines, Taiwan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Burma   as well as parties and organizations from Japan, Korea, Indonesia, India and Pakistan. All participants have first hand and practical experience in political campaigns.

The workshop is facilitated by Dr. Ronald Meinardus, Resident Representative of Friedrich Naumann Foundation Manila, and CALD Executive Director John Coronel. Ms. Malou Tequia will present the successful  case study of the campaign of Senator Mar Roxas who topped the recent Philippine elections. Ms Tequia was the campaign manager of Mr. Roxas. Sam Rainsy, leader of the Cambodian national opposition, will also discuss the political situation of the kingdom.
