CALD to hold Vision Mission Workshop in Penang

(August 18, 2004) The Council of Asian Liberals & Democrats will be holding a Vision Mission Workshop next week (August 26 to 28) in Penang, Malaysia. This project is in cooperation with the Friedrich Nuamann Foundation and the Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia.

The objectives of this project are to revisit and analyze (and possibly revise) the vision, mission and key-objectives of CALD; identify the key challenges confronting liberalism/liberals in Asia (and the world); formulate key programmatic positions/concepts which the organizations intends to promote in the next ten years; assess the internal and external environment of CALD and derive strategic conclusions for organizational development; devise strategies to effectively promote the key programmatic positions/concepts; and determine the scope, character, and priorities of services to be provided by the secretariat to the member parties in the short and medium terms.

Attending the workshop are the former chairs of the CALD, namely: M.R. Sukhumbhand Paribatra, MP of the Democrat Party of Thailand; Sam Rainsy, MP, of the Sam Rainsy Party; former Representative Florencio Abad of the Liberal Party of the Philippines and the incumbent Secretary General, Bi-Khim Hsiao, MP, of the Democratic Progressive Party of Taiwan. All eight political parties that are full members of the organization will have its representatives to this workshop. Several of the attendees are founding members of CALD.

Resource persons are Graham Watson, MEP, leader of the European Liberal Democratic Reform Party Group (ELDR) and Dr. Barun Mitra of India’s Liberty Institute. The workshop will be facilitated by Mr. Mario Taguiwalao, president of the Philippine liberal think tank, the National Institute for Policy Studies.
