(April 29, 2005) Ms. Bi-Khim Hsiao, MP, CALD Secretary General and Director of International Affairs of the Democratic Progressive Party of Taiwan; Mr. Sam Rainsy, MP, leader of the Cambodian opposition and former CALD Chairman who is currently in political exile in Paris; Dr. Nereus Acosta, MP, Executive Vice President of the Liberal Party of the Philippines; and, Dr. Rajiva Wijesinha, President of the Liberal Party of Sri Lanka have announced their participation in the 53rd Congress of Liberal International in Sofia, Bulgaria from May 12 to 14, 2005.

The London-based Liberal International (LI) is the world federation of liberal political parties. Founded in 1947 it has become a pre-eminent network for liberal parties and for the strengthening of liberal democracy around the world. CALD is a cooperating member of LI. LI has three Asian members—the Liberal Parties of Philippines and Sri Lanka and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). DPP’s Bi-Khim Hsiao is currently the treasurer and the only Asian bureau member of LI.

The LI Sophia 2005 Congress will focus on “Freedom and Security” and will be held at the National Palace of Culture. The four members of the CALD Executive Committee attending this congress will represent both their parties and CALD.

During the congress, there will be a workshop entitled “Results for and Challenges of Regional Cooperation in Asia and Latin America” between CALD and RELIAL, the network of Latin American liberals. CALD will be represented by Legislators Hsiao, Sam and Acosta and Dr. Wijesinha in this workshop.
