Democrat Leader Abhisit and Bangkok Governor address CALD delegation

(June 17, 2005/ Bangkok) Democrat Party leader and leader of the Thai opposition Hon. Abhisit Vejjajiva, Hon. Apirak Kosayodhin, Governor of Bangkok, and Hon. Thana Cheeravinij, Chairman of the Bangkok Metropolitan Council, addressed today the delegates of the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD).During the luncheon reception hosted by CALD and the Democrat Party at the Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel, Mr. Vejjajiva as the new party leader, spoke on the current challenges and prospects for the future of the Thai democrats. Senator Vijayaratnam Seeveratnam of the People’s Movement Party of Malaysia chaired the session.

During his keynote address, the Thai parliamentarian scored the democratic and political shortcomings in Thailand under the current administration of the populist Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Mr. Vejjajiva however noted that liberalism and democracy will always prevail despite these setbacks.

After the Executive Committee meeting, the CALD delegates proceeded to the headquarters of the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority in the city center.  During the visit, Governor Kosayodhin and Chairman Cheeravinij spoke on the programs and projects and legislative agenda, respectively, forBangkok and its people. A multi-media presentation was also presented. This was followed by an open forum.
