(Taipei/December 18, 2003) Liberal International’s Secretary General Federica Sabatti and Political Advisor Jasper Veen, Friedrich Naumann Foundation Regional Director for East and Southeast Asia Uwe Johannen and CALD Executive Director John Joseph S. Coronel visited Taipei and Kaohsiung, Taiwan from December 15 to 18 in preparation for the Liberal International Asian Conference.
In Taipei, the delegation met with Mr. Lee Ying-Yuan, Deputy Secretary General of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of Taiwan and Ms. Bi-Khim Hsiao, MP, Director of DPP’s International Relations Department.
In Kaohsiung, the delegation paid a courtesy visit to the Hon. Frank Hsieh, Mayor of the Taiwanese port city where the conference will be held. The delegation also met with tourism and cultural officers of Kaohsiung City and representatives from the Splendor Hotel, the official conference site.
The Liberal International Asian Conference will be from March 4 to 7, 2004 and is a joint project of LI, CALD, FNF and DPP. It will focus on the theme “Democratic Consolidation and Its Challenges” and will be keynoted by H.E. Chen Shui-bian, President of Taiwan. Aside from the conference, which is two weeks prior to Taiwan’s presidential elections, the delegates will also observe DPP’s campaign. LI and CALD will also hold their respective executive committee meetings.
