(January 18, 2006/ Manila) The Liberal Party of the Philippines (LP), a founding member and current chair party of the Council of Asian Liberals & Democrats (CALD), is celebrating its 60th foundation anniversary from January 19 to 21, 2006. The celebrations will focus on the theme “honoring and celebrating our traditions: leading the way of reforms towards a liberating society.”
Tomorrow, there will be a regional conference organized by the National Institute for Policy Studies, the Philippine liberal think tank. The keynote address will be delivered by Philippine Senate President Franklin Drilon who will speak on “A Liberal Democratic Asia: Our Common Goal for the 21st Century”. Senator Drilon is also LP President and CALD Chairman.
CALD invited two Asian speakers for this event, namely: Dr. Martin Lee, MP, Founding Chairman of the Democratic Party of Hong Kong who will speak on “Sustaining Democratic Gains in Asia: The Role of CALD and its Member Parties”; and Dr. Buranaj Smuthraks of the Democrat Party of Thailand who will speak on “The Birth of Liberal Democracy in Asia and the Role of Political Parties”.
LP Executive Vice President and CALD Secretary General Dr. Nereus Acosta will speak on “Drawing the Asian Youth to the Liberal Democratic Asian Liberal Youth Movement”.
Other activities include an exhibit, the launching of a new book and a new multi-media party presentation and the testimonial luncheon.
