M.R. Sukhumbhand wins as Governor of Bangkok by landslide

Democrat Party candidate M.R. Sukhumbhand Paribatra won the Bangkok gubernatorial elections held last January 11, 2009. Unofficial Results showed that M.R. Sukhumbhand garnered 920,000 votes while Yuranunt Pamornmontri of the Puea Thai party, who was also placed second in exit polls, garnered 603,414 votes. Other candidates such as M.L. Nattakorn Devakula received 329,717 votes, Kaewsun Atibhodhi with 142,334 votes, and Leena Jangjanja with 8,905.

M.R. Sukhumbhand, former chair of CALD and member of the CALD Executive Committee, vowed to serve all sectors of the society as Governor of Bangkok. He promised to return Bangkok back to the world map as a major metropolitan area and and continue with reform initiatives where fellow Democrat and former Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin left off. Sukhumbhand is determined to provide sound policies and initiatives for the improvement of the city’s economy, tourism and public safety.
