(August 25, 2006/Bangkok) The National Council of the Union of Burma (NCUB), a member of the Council of Asian Liberals & Democrats (CALD), held its 8th Congress from August 14 to 18, 2006 to further political strategies to return Burma to democracy.
NCUB is an alliance of democratic political organizations including the National League for Democracy (Liberated Areas), the Members of Parliament Union, the National Democratic Front, the Democratic Alliance of Burma, and the International NCUB. The NCUB has held a congress every two years since 1992.
The Eighth Congress unanimously voted to extend the resolutions of the previous Congress, expressing that they reflected the current political situation. After a great deal of deliberation and exchange of ideas, this year’s Congress voted in the following four new policies to prepare for intensifying political struggle.
1) The Secretariat will expand in size from nine to eleven secretaries.
2) The term of members of Congress was extended from two to three years.
3) Greater participation of female delegates. (This Congress elected the first woman secretary to the Executive).
4) NCUB will establish an office in Europe to facilitate political advocacy.
The Congress called upon the people of Burma to work together to overcome their country’s ongoing political crisis.
Mr. Maung Maung, a member of the CALD Executive Committee, was reelected as NCUB Secretary General.
