President Chen keynotes LI’s 54th Congress

(November 10, 2006/ Marrakech, Morocco)  H.E. Chen Shui-bian, President of Taiwan and former Chairman of the Council of Asian Liberals & Democrats (CALD), was one of the keynote speakers during the Opening Ceremonies of the 54th Liberal International Congress at the Salle des Ministres, Palais de Congress, Marrakech, Morocco.

President Chen’s message was delivered through a multimedia from Taipei.

President Chen narrated his own country’s dramatic transformation from a dictatorship to a democracy while accomplishing significant leaps in terms of economic development.

Dr. Martin Lee, founding chairman of the Democrat Party of Hong Kong and CALD individual member, was the other of only two Asian speakers during the opening ceremonies.

Dr. Lee debunked the myth of Asian values propagated by Dr. Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore. Dr. Lee argued that freedom and human rights are universal values that people all over the world, regardless of ethnicity and culture, yearn for.
