The Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats participated at the 187th Executive Committee Meeting of Liberal International (LI) and its subsequent conference on the Responsibility to Protect Doctrine—an initiative launched by a number of prominent liberals. Hosted by the British Group of Liberal International, this took place in London, United Kingdom on 14-15 October 2011.

CALD was represented by its Chairperson, Hon. Rajiva Wijesinha, MP, who also served as LI Vice President in the past. According to him, the LI Executive Committee Meeting “was a great opportunity to renew contacts with Liberal parties all over the world.” As this was set at the National Liberal Club, delegates were able to return “to the roots of Liberalism and the great reforming Liberal governments of the 19th century, when the Club was founded.”

“I was reminded, seeing the many pictures and busts of William Gladstone, of his assertion that all over the world he would back the masses against classes,” he added. “I hope Liberals all over the world remember that as we reaffirm the unique nature of Liberalism as against extremes on either side.”

Perspectives on current international developments and the need to build efficient mechanisms to protect civilians across the world were brought to the table by distinguished speakers and leaders, including: Rt. Hon. Nick Clegg, UK Deputy Prime Minister and Leader of the Liberal Democrats; John Lord Alderdice, Past President of LI and Convenor of LibDems in the House of Lords, UK; and Hon. Sam Rainsy, MP, Leader of the Opposition, Cambodia.

Hon. Sam had the opportunity to speak at length about the political situation in his country. At this same meeting, his party was unanimously endorsed as an LI full member in solidarity with Cambodian democracy fighters. The Sam Rainsy Party is a CALD member and is set to take on CALD chairmanship beginning in 2012.

Other recent positive developments in Asia, in particular the seemingly loosening military grip in Burma, were also noted, while taking into account that much more needs to be done to further advance political reform. There is also a need for more concerted Liberal activity in South Asia. CALD and LI will work together again on 3 November 2011 at a forum on networking for democracy in Singapore. This will also serve as a ceremony to award Dr. Chee Soon Juan (Singapore Democratic Party) with the Liberal International Prize for Freedom 2011.
