Southeast Asian interns visit CALD–FNF Office; Discuss political parties in Asian democracies

(Manila, Philippines/ February 11, 2004) Interns from the Southeast Asian Committee for Advocacy (SEACA) visited the Manila headquarters of the Council of Asian Liberals & Democrats and the Friedrich Naumann Stiftung Philippine office as part of its 10-day internship focusing on political and electoral reform.

The interns are Mr. Chin Tatt Yong of Suara Rakyat Malaysia, a human rights group; Mr. Mar Sophal (a delegate of the last NDI-CALD Political Party Reform Workshop in Bangkok) of the Cambodian election monitoring group—COMFREL; Mr. Budhi Masthupi of the National Ombudsman Commission of Indonesia and Ms. Gigi Ventanilla of the Social Action Center of the Archdiocese of Legazpi, Philippines. They were accompanied by Mr. Aries Arugay of the Institute for Popular Democracy, a Philippine NGO that organized the program.

Dr. Ronald Meinardus, FNF-Manila Resident Representative; Mr. John Joseph S. Coronel, CALD Executive Director; Mr. Raul Cordenillo, CALD Program Officer and Mr. Lito Arlegue who was part of the National Democratic Institute and CALD program on strengthening political parties, served as presentors and resource persons  on the following topics: organizational background of FNF, organizational background of CALD, political party reform projects, strategies and best practices for internal party reform in the national and regional levels, and the role of civil society in the reform movement.
