Surin Pitsuan, Abhisit and Drilon receive La Margherita Party

(June 10, 2005)  Former Thai Foreign Minister and CALD Chairman Surin Pitsuan, MP, and Thai Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva, MP, received the Italian La Margherita Party delegation headed by parliamentarian Gianni Vernetti at the party headquarters in Bangkok last June 9. The following day, the delegation was met by Philippine Senate President Franklin Drilon, President of the Liberal Party, and Rep. Neric Acosta, party executive vice president, at the Senators’ Lounge of the historic Manila Hotel in the Philippine capital.

The Asian mission of the La Margherita Party also covered the cities of Delhi and Tokyo. In Manila, the delegation also visited the joint offices of CALD, Friedrich Naumann Foundation and the Young Liberals & Democrats of Asia. Separate meetings were held with Dr. Ronald Meinardus, Resident Representative of FNF Manila; Messrs. John Coronel and Brian Gonzales of the CALD Secretariat; and, Ms. Anne Elicano of the YLDA Secretariat. On the night of their arrival in Manila, CALD Executive Director hosted a dinner in honor of Mr. Vernetti and Mr. Luca Bader, the other member of the delegation, at Illustrado in the walled city of Intramuros. Among those who attended the dinner were Education Undersecretary Chito Gascon, Liberal Party Director General Chit Asis and Dr. Meinardus. During their stay in Bangkok, Ms. Joy Senakant of the Democrat Party, hosted a lunch for Messrs. Vernetti and Bader.
