3rd CALD Communication Workshop opens in Kuala Lumpur

(September 17, 2005/Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) The Council of Asian Liberals & Democrats opens this evening the 3rd CALD Communication Workshop with the theme Political Parties and the Internet at the Hotel Istana in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, The workshop is hosted by the Malaysian People’s Movement Party (Gerakan) and is supported by Friedrich Naumann Foundation.

The workshop aims to review implementation of CALD’s communications strategy and – if considered necessary – update; critically assess the usage of the internet by all CALD member parties and observer parties; strengthen the network of media specialists of CALD member parties and expand this to selected members of YLDA; present and share best practices regarding the usage of the internet in political parties; and, observe and understand the media environment in Malaysia.

Participants come from CALD members, associates and observers. Communications specialists from the Democrat Party of Thailand, Democratic Progressive Party of Taiwan, Liberal Parties of the Philippines and Sri Lanka, Malaysian People’s Movement Party, Singapore Democratic Party, National Council of the Union of Burma, Sam Rainsy Party of Cambodia, Liberal Forum Pakistan, Democratic Party Hong Kong, Uri Party of  Korea, Nation Awakening Party (Indonesia) and Indonesian Party of Struggle attended. Also participating were the Young Liberals & Democrats of Asia (YLDA) and two of its member organizations, the Youth Initiative of Nepal and the National Khmer Nation Youth Movement of Cambodia.

The participants themselves will present their parties’ websites and usage of digital communication during campaigns and in ordinary times.

The workshop is facilitated by Dr. Ronald Meinardus, a journalist by profession who is the Resident Representative of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation (FNF) Manila and CALD Executive Director John Joseph S. Coronel who has been involved in several national electoral campaigns.

The speakers of the workshop and the related activities (visit to the PGRM Headquarters, visit to Malaysiakini and tour of Cyberjaya) are Mr. James Gomez of the FNF Regional Office in Bangkok who has been acclaimed by Newsweek as an Asian Trailblazer and by Asiaweek as one of the region’s most influential communicators; Mr. Premesh Chandra, Chief Executive Officer of the renowned cyber publication Malaysia Kini; Dr. Meinardus who will speak  on the recently concluded German Elections; FNF Malaysia Project Director Dr. Rainer Huefers; Gerakan Secretary General Deputy Minister Chye Kwang Chye, MP, and Vice President for International Affairs former Senator S. Vijayaratnam; Mr. Nicholas Shariff Collins, Senior Manager of the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDC); and, Ms. Raseyanti Mohd Rashid of the MDC Incubator Centre.
