The CALD family has a new baby.

The CALD Executive Committee which convened in Bali, Indonesia on 6 November 2011 unanimously accepted the application for membership of Civil Will Party  (CWP) of Mongolia.  CWP is one of the three main opposition political parties which have seats in the Mongolian Parliament.  Party Chairwoman Dr. Sanjaasuren Oyun is a Member of Parliament, together with D. Enkhbat and Z. Altai.  The party also holds key positions in the Office of the President, having supported incumbent President Elbegdorj Tsakhia, Mongolia’s first democratically elected president, in the 2009 elections.

In Dr. Oyun’s letter to the Executive Committee, she conveyed her firm belief that CWP’s memberhip in CALD “will further support our party’s efforts to expand and develop liberal ideas and to bring about swift development within our country.” Dr. Oyun was represented in the Executive Committee meeting by Ms. Tegshjargal Erdenechimeg, CWP’s Secretary of Foreign Relations, together with Ms. Tsend Enkhtuya and Mr. Tseepel Ganbat.  In her speech to the Executive Committee, Ms. Erdenechimeg noted CWP’s commitment to liberal values and principles as seen in the party’s emphasis on protecting human rights, improving civil education, developing open, transparent and responsible governance, and strengthening democratic institutions.  “In order to develop good governance, we find the support and assistance of CALD member parties and organizations to be critical.  We hope that you can all help us to ground a more liberal ideology into our Mongolian soil”, Ms. Erdenechimeg said.

CWP was also recently accepted as full member in Liberal International last October 2011.  The Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Liberty (FNF) Southeast and East Asia Office, in September 2011, also conducted a capacity-building workshop for CWP.

Cooperation with CWP started more than a year ago, when CALD and FNF conducted a joint mission to Mongolia.  Since then, CWP has been a regular observer in CALD events.
