Asian and European Democrats Declare Strategic Partnership

(December 3, 2005/ Rome, Italy) Asian and European Democrats presented its Final Declaration at the end of the three-day conference “A New Europe/Asia Strategic Partnership: Challenges and Opportunities”.

The high–level conference which brought together Asian and European political leaders, international experts and journalists agreed on the following general principles:

(1)                            Strengthen political dialogue, increasing cooperation and integration between Europe and Asia;

(2)                            Establish a closer partnership and integration between European and Asian economies;

(3)                            Promote a partnership for sustainable development and humane globalization;

(4)                            Affirm the need for international security, for fighting against terrorism and for promoting multilateral dialogue in crisis areas (Iraq, Afghanistan, Israel and Palestine, Iran, Korea, and Cambodia and Burma);

(5)                            Promote democracy and human rights;

(6)                            Establish a network of Asian and European Democrats.

The commitment towards a new strategic partnership will enable Asians and Europeans to exercise shared responsibilities and contribute their respective sets of values and economic, political and security potential towards global governance.
