(Bangkok, Thailand/ November 30, 2003) The Executive Committee of the Council of Asian Liberals & Democrats decided to focus on  wealth creation and sustainable development for its 2003 Conference. Colombo, Sri Lanka was also chosen as the venue for the said conference scheduled from May 28 to 31, 2003.

The topic and venue were discussed by CALD Executive Committee during its meeting last June 15, 2002 at the Hotel Borobodur, Jakarta, Indonesia.

In preparation for the meeting, CALD Executive Director, John Coronel,  traveled to Sri Lanka on July 25 and 26 to meet with the FNF Office and the Liberal Party and to visit prospective venues. The Taj Samudra Hotel was chosen as the official conference hotel.

A planning meeting was held recently last November 29, 2002 in Bangkok, Thailand to further prepare for the said activity. Among those in attendance were Dr. Uwe Johannen, FNF Regional Director for East and Southeat Asia, Dr. Herbert Von Welck,  FNF Regional Director for South Asia, Dr. Wijesinha, Mr. James Gomez, Dr. Alan Smith  and Charlotte Long of the FNF Regional Office and Mr. Coronel and Raul Cordenillo of the CALD Secretariat.

The CALD 2003 Colombo Conference would be the first CALD activity in South Asia. CALD conferences serve as venues where critical issues and problems facing Asia are tackled, with the view in mind of adopting liberal solutions and policies. This follows the highly successful conferences on globalization (Manila, 2001), democratic transitions  (Jakarta, 2000) and the Asian economic crisis ( Bangkok, 1998).
